living dead redux

last night, my friend came over with Return of the Living Dead, which is an awesome punk/zombie horror flick from the mid-80s. the story revolves around a gang of punk teenagers, except for a random preppy girl and an even more random swing/mod kid. the leader of the crew is a hardcore punk dude named suicide, who has a girlfriend named trash (my favorite name in this movie, though, is Scuz.. haha). trash has the most amazing look ever! it took me a minute or ten to find a picture on the interwebs, because she's stark naked (save for full-leg grey leg warmers that would make american apparel weep) for almost the entire movie..

aforementioned grey stockings/legwarmers, scandalous black leather shorts, leopard tank top, vest that looks like a cross between michael jackson's thriller jacket and a star trek uniform, and what looks like full-arm fingerless gloves= totally badass

at first i dug her flame red punk hairdo, but up close it looks kind of grody because they obviously sprayed it instead of dyeing and gelling it, bleh. with her hair and the face designs, she looks like a cross between ronald mcdonald and a character from Dune or something. can you tell i like making cross-culture reference comparisons?

there was another character with a pretty cool look as well, named casey-- however, i couldn't find a picture of her.. aren't you supposed to be able to find just about anything on the interwebs? anyhow, she was wearing a robin's egg blue short knit dress that was off the shoulder and belted: very classic 80s, with a touch of punk with her blue "bird of paradise" updo-- my friend's way of putting it, which was apt enough.

all in all, a fun movie to watch-- makes me want to find more obscure 80s flicks to draw fashion inspiration from..

richmond holla shot calla

i almost fell over when i went to the NYLON website, and i saw my friend max on the homepage! i'm so happy that richmond street style is finally getting recognized, and it's all thanks to the rad girls at Rumors, casey and marshe. richmond is actually a lot more "scene" than new york in terms of condensation, since it's such a small town and the style revolves around the Fan neighborhood outside the vcu campus. some people think that richmond and hipster style in general is overdone and cliche (and perhaps it is), but the fact is it's just so much more interesting and varied than the traditional style, so people should just be able to dress however the hell they want, and good for them if they get featured in one of the raddest magazines around!

max and derrick= <3

i have a love/hate relationship with this city (long story, has to do with how awesome it is, which can be a bad thing for me sometimes), but it's so amazing that it's coming into its own as a culture mecca; it's no longer a college town that everyone leaves once they finish school, but rather a city in which young people have the opportunity to take the initiative and make a living doing what they love, and Rumors is the best example of that. casey and marshe work obscenely hard to run this miniature style empire-- and, incredibly, not even to make a profit but to put the fashion and the city that they love on the forefront. they fucking ROCK. the end.
